Although no single Emmy night look was as jaw-dropping as Sean Spicer’s surprise guest appearance, the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards were not short of head-turning fashion moments.
Host Stephen Colbert sang it best in his opening number: “Everything is better on TV.” But since we can’t all go prancing into work in a custom Balmain gown, we’ve got the next best thing—statement sunglasses that can make you feel like a star (red carpet and paparazzi not included).
Below are the top 5 fashion trends from the 2017 Emmy Awards and how you can emulate each look with eyewear from Eyeconic, VSP’s in-network online eyewear store.
TREND: So Hot White Now
Whether you’re a fellow Game of Thrones binger or not, you know that winter is here. Although the fantasy world of dragons and white walkers were absent from this year’s awards due to eligibility, there were plenty of Hollywood’s greatest strutting the carpet in garments white as (Jon) snow. Aijiona Alexus, Evan Rachel Wood, and Priyanka Chopra showed us just how refreshing white on red can be. Still, it was youngster Millie Bobby Brown whose white ballerina-inspired Calvin Klein by Appointment number with a sassy bandana belt that had us dreaming of sugarplums dancing in our head.
TREND: Revenge Red
Taking a page straight from the major winner of the night, The Handmaid’s Tale, starlets like Nicole Kidman, Issa Rae, Sarah Hyland and even the show’s own Yvonne Strahovski rocked bold reds—à la the scarlet cloaks worn by the handmaids in the Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood’s book. It’s a daring, dramatic look. But what did you expect? The show did win best drama.
EMULATE WITH EYEWEAR: Heat things up with these vintage-inspired oversized rounds or with these elegant cat eyes with decorative baroque embellishments.
TREND: Liquid Metal
No Hollywood red carpet is complete without a number of shimmery dresses, but this year, metallic silver oozed into the spotlight making it the trend of the night. Talk about the silver screen! Many of television’s leading ladies, including Tracee Ellis Ross, Laverne Cox, Sarah Paulson and Anna Chlumsky, opted for the futuristic-inspired look.
EMULATE WITH EYEWEAR: Hop on the sparkle express and into disco ball la-la land with these rounded silver stunners entwined in metal. Love the trend, but want to start off slow? Dip a toe in the gunmetal pool with a simple and chic metallic aviator.
TREND: Take the Plunge
From Shailene Woodley’s velvet Ralph Lauren number to Felicity Huffman’s icy blue Tony Ward gown, we couldn’t help but notice the A-listers who dared to bare a little décolletage—or a lot of it. Some necklines even took a deep dive into belly-button territory. But when you see Jessica Biel slide on in like a goddess-like, 7th Heaven dream … you can’t help but admire her fearlessness (thank you fashion tape!).
EMULATE WITH EYEWEAR: Plunge into the trend with this vintage-inspired pair, complete with a metal accent to highlight its deep curve.
TREND: Purple Reign
No sorrow or pain caused here by the vivacious violet choices from the likes of Donald Glover and Lea Michele. Still, it was the younger Emmy attendees who seriously upped the style game in the most royal of hues. The young cast of Stranger Things rose to the occasion in velvets and vintage prints with Caleb McLaughlin’s purple floral tuxedo jacket stealing the show.
EMULATE WITH EYEWEAR: Defy tradition with a bold (and unisex!) Havana violet pair.
